‘Rams’ nominated for EU film prize

Icelandic film Rams directed by Grímur Hákonarson has been nominated for the European Parliament’s LUX Film Prize.

The film, entitled Hrútar in Icelandic, was one of the ten nominees announced at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival in the Czech Republic yesterday. Rams won the Un Certain Regard award at the Cannes Film Festival back in May.

The films nominated for the LUX Film Prize award are films which “help celebrate the universal reach of European values, illustrate the diversity of European traditions and shed light on the process of European integration”.

This is the first time that an Icelandic film has been nominated for this award since it was first given in 2007. The ten nominees will be whittled down to three finalists for the Venice Film Festival, then subtitled in all 24 official languages of the European Union and shown in the 28 Member States.

The overall winner will be announced at the end of the year.
