Stories through folk music

“The festival shows folk music from various angles,” says musician Ingunn Huld, who is one of the organizers of Reykjavik Folk Festival as well as one of the performers. The festival is held at Kex Hostel, taking place tonight and tomorrow night.

Performing at the festival are some of Iceland’s most acclaimed musicians like Ragnheiður Gröndal, Ellen Kristjáns, sóley and Högni Egilsson.

Sóley and Högni are both popular and rather hip musicians, neither of them known for folk music as sóley mostly makes indie music and Högni’s music projects take on just about every other genre than folk. Huld expects Högni to put a spin on his music so it fits the theme of the festival. Sóley does not have to stretch far as she claims that all her music has its roots in the folk genre.

Interesting stories

“It is interesting to see what stories people have to say,” says Huld, “some of the musicians will put a folk twist to their own material while others play cover songs.”

Ingunn Huld is the rookie in the group of performers, her debut album Fjúk was released only last November. “It is some sort of pop music with a folk flair,” is how Huld describes her album, which was very well received. Huld will be performing tomorrow night at the festival, and songs from the album will undoubtedly be on the programme.
