‘Sparrows’ to fly the flag for Iceland at the Oscars

Members of the Icelandic Film and Television Academy have selected Rúnar Rúnarsson’s Sparrows as Iceland’s submission for next year’s ‘Oscars’ Academy Award for Best Foreign-Language Film.

Four eligible Icelandic films were shortlisted for the spot, and members had until midnight last night to vote electronically for their preferred representative.

Sparrows, directed and written by Rúnar Rúnarsson has already been immensely successful, and has also been chosen as Iceland’s entry to the 2016 Nordic Council Film Prize.

The film tells the story of Ari, a sixteen-year-old boy sent to live with his father in a small Icelandic fishing village, and the awkward relationship between them.

Two Icelandic films have in the past received Oscar nominations: Börn náttúrunnar/Children of Nature (1991) by Friðrik Þór Friðriksson for Best Foreign-Language Film, and Síðasti bærinn/The Last Farm (2005) – also by Rúnar Rúnarsson – for Best Live Action Short Film.
