Hallowe'en does not have a long standing tradition in Icelandic society, which prefers Ash Wednesday to dress up. In recent years Hallowe'en has however been gaining popularity, especially amongst grown-ups who use it as an excuse to dress up and party.

There is therefore no lack of Hallowe'en parties over the weekend in the pubs and clubs of Reykjavik, which will most likely be dressed up in cobwebs and pumpkins for the occasion.

Many Hallowe'en parties give prizes for the best costume, so it might very well be worth it to dress up. If you don’t, head downtown and enjoy the variety of characters strolling around the streets of Reykjavik.

The costume of choice this year seems to be that of a clown, according to Halla Ýr Albertsdóttir manager of Partýbúðin. Clown costumes have been the popular choice of prime party stores Partýbúðin and Hókus pókus, "a clown madness," is how Einar Arnarsson owner of Hókus pókus describes it.

Here you can find a list of Halloween parties in Iceland.
