The President of Iceland has sent a message of condolence to his Italian counterpart following yesterday’s devastating earthquake, which is now believed to have killed almost 250 people.

“This disaster reminds us all not only of the great power of the forces of nature, but also of the values which shine through in the work of volunteers and rescue services now helping the victims,” says Guðni Th. Jóhannesson.

“The image of the beautiful town of Amatrice, now a scene of grief and ruin, will live long in the memories of Icelanders.”
