Mayday distress call from US sailboat

Icelandic coastguard vessel Þór.

A US sailboat sent a distress call at around 3.30 a.m this morning. The Icelandic coastguard dispatched a nearby research vessel to the site of the call. The marine research ship was around 30 sea miles away from the signal. Coastguard ship Þór is also on its way.

The signal had been raised manually so it's clear that the situation is serious.  There are big waves in the ocean at the area but visibility is good.

Iceland Monitor will update this story as soon as we receive more news.

Update at 10:56

Mbl.is reports that the US sailboat thought to be in trouble has been found. All three crew members are safe and sound. The mast of the boat had broken in bad weather and there was a power cut.  They are being aided now by crew members of marine research vessel Árni Friðriksson.
