There is uncertainty about the future of the government due to Katrín Jakobsdóttir, Prime Minister, leaving the government to run for President.

It is unclear who will take over her office or whether the parties will continue their cooperation. Two and a half years have passed since the elections and the tasks of the government are heavy.

No answers at this point

The parties have been engaged in intensive dialogue since the announcement of Jakobsdóttir, but they have no answers yet. Both the Independence Party and the Progressive Party are seeking the prime minister’s seat, but further upheaval is in the charts if the coalition is to continue.

According to Morgunblaðið’s sources, it is time for the Independence Party to lead the government, as they feel they have been compromising up to now, being the biggest party in the coalition. However, there are serious doubts about the ability of the unchanged government to strengthen itself in the run-up to the elections; on the contrary, its position may continue to deteriorate steadily. It is therefore appropriate to consider more options, although the dialogue on the unchanged government has not been concluded.
