Katrín Jakobsdóttir MP has called for a meeting of the Icelandic Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee to discuss NATO support of Turkish actions against the Kurds.

“NATO has expressed its support for Turkish action against Islamic State, but such action seems to be just as much against the Kurds,” explains Jakobsdóttir, leader of the Left-Green Movement party (‘Vinstrihreyfingin – Grænt framboð’). “As a member of NATO, Iceland should discuss whether such action should be supported.”

“The [Foreign] Ministry is legally bound to consult the Foreign Affairs Committee on major decisions […],” the former Minister for Education continues. “It is natural for the Committee to hear what discussions took place leading up to the announcement and what stance the Icelandic representatives took.”

Jakobsdóttir goes on to suggest that Iceland’s membership of NATO needs also to be discussed. “Everybody – whether supporters or critics of Iceland’s membership of NATO – should want to discuss the basis for decisions taken. Here we are dealing with the Turkish-Kurd dispute in the context of Islamic State, which appears to be an unrelated matter.”
