Over twenty people applied for asylum in Iceland this weekend,  most of them from Albania and Macedonia. According to information from the Iceland Directorate of Immigration people from these countries have never been awarded asylum in Iceland as both countries are considered to be safe by most of the European countries.

One family received a residence permit however after a decree by the Immigrataion and Asylum Appeals Board. Local paper Víkurfréttir reported that 23 individuals applied for asylum in Iceland upon arriving at Keflavik International Airport yesterday and this was confirmed to mbl.is by the Suðurnes police. Five families and one individual applied for asylum.

This is the greatest number of asylum seekers to arrive in Iceland in one day.
