The 10 home trends shaking up Iceland

In Iceland, trends tend to be more noticeable than abroad where the spectrum of the imagination seems wider. People often tend to jump on the same bandwagon when it comes to personal or home style and everything looks exactly the same.

There's a local Facebook page that has achieved immense popularity called Skreytum hús for example where people post pictures of their homes and seek advice for home refurbishment and interior design.

We took a light hearted look below at the home trends shaking 2018/ 2019.

1. Grey or blue walls

No more white walls for Iceland, everyone is busy finding the perfect shade of grey for their home. Colours are also coming back in and blue, green and even pink shades are IN.

2. Photo collages

Printing out Instagram photos of yourself with your cool friends and your family and placing them on either an entire wall or in a huge frame is very popular.

3. Omaggio vases

In 2014 Icelanders went nuts over flower vases designed by the Omaggio company. We even wrote a news story on it. The omaggio vase is still immensely popular and we dare to say, just as naff.

4. Inspirational home quotes

This is really big in Iceland, and actually a lot of peope have these in English for some bizarre reason. Things like In this Home we share, we laugh, we make mistakes and we say sorry.

5. The DYI candle fire place.

People have a current obsession about making candlelight fire places. For those who don't have an actual fireplace. That faux candle fireplace is going to make your dismallly cold Icelandic winter so much more cozy you know.

6. The minimalist children's room

The current trend for kid's rooms is some sort of Scandinavian dream, powder pastel coloured walls or black and white furnishings, a trendy cream coloured tee pee, one expensive wooden toy and perhaps three stylish books. The children are usually dressed to match the room.

7. The Ittala glassware

In Iceland, no stylish home is without its ubiquitous collection of the Finnish designed Ittala glasses, candleholders and bowls. Scandinavian chic for everyone.

8. The Eames or Arne Jacobssen chair

For those with a bit of extra cash, a chair designed by Ray and Charles Eames or Arne Jacobssen is almost a neccissity. Every cool home in Iceland has at least one Egg, Swan or Eames rocking chair in a funky colour.

9. The Kitchen Aid mixer

Also very neccessary for a home with standing: a Kitchen Aid mixer to whip up all those perfect buttercream cakes. This should be in a bright unusual colour, or the latest trend, rose gold.

10. The black wall unit

Every stylish Icelandic home de jour has a Pinterest worthy black minimalistic wall shelf unit featuring the following items: Green plants, a designer house bird by Vitra or failing that, a wooden monkey designed by Kaj Bogesen, a capital letter in black or white made out of wood, and a couple of books on photography that nobody ever pages through.
