The Iceland Met Office has issued a warning for heavy rainfall and possible flooding for South and South West Iceland tonight, Friday.

Heavy rainfall is forecast for the South and South-West parts of the county from Friday evening 25 May, continuing through the weekend.

The rivers Hvítá in Borgarfjörður and Hvítá in Árnessýsla will rise considerably in response to the rainfall. Rivers and streams in the capital region could also flood due to the rainfall.

Close to Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull, localised flooding is possible, particularly on the southern slopes of Eyjafjöll, at Sólheimajökull, and on Mýrdalssandur, east of Vík. On some road sections, water could accumulate against the roadside, for example close to the Múlakvísl river on Mýrdalssandur.

Standing water is also possible on road surfaces due to the prolonged, intense rainfall. The weather conditions could also cause debris flows. Note that the weekend rainfall is exceptional in nature so travel-plans should be revised for the above-mentioned locations.
