The road through Þingvellir National Park has been closed for maintenance and will remain closed into October. This was announced on the website of the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration. Traffic will instead be directed to a detour along Þingvallavatn lake, through Vallavegur road, which is narrow and ill-suited for large vehicles. Travelers are urged to drive with caution and to consider other routes.

Plans are to improve the road that lies from the Service Center in the park to Vallavegur road. The project is twofold. The first part will be completed in October, but the second phase of the project is scheduled from April until September next year.

Please note that the road closure starts east of the Service Center, so that access to the Service Center remains open. The Road Administration requests that travel service companies use smaller vehicles, as much as possible, during the repairs.
