Work has begun on a new geothermal lagoon on Kársnes point in Kópavogur, just south of Reykjavík, Morgunblaðið reports. The lagoon is set to open in 2021.

The first phase of the project includes a geothermal lagoon on the ocean, with a view of the ocean and of Bessastaðir, the presidential residence. In addition, a cold pool and steam baths are included, with accompanying facilities – among them a place for selling refreshments.

Excavation work has begun on the 3-hectare (7.4-acre) lot, and cement work is expected to start next week.

The lagoon will be centrally located and easily accessible in the capital area, Gestur Þórisson, one of the people behind the project, explains. “We think it will be interesting for everyone to be able to visit a lagoon this short a distance from town, and still out in nature, for the experience and enjoyment of it,” he states.

Kópavogur Mayor Ármann Kr. Ólafsson expects the lagoon to become one of the capital area’s landmarks for a long time to come.

The project is a cooperation between Nature Resort ehf., owned by Gestur and Eyþór Guðjónsson, and the Canadian travel experience company Pursuit, owned by Viad. Pursuit operates the flight ride theater FlyOverIceland in Reykjavík.
