An five-year-old child was badly bitten by a dog on Friday and had to undergo two hours of surgery at the Children's Hospital in Reykjavik, receiving 80 stitches to the face. A bicycle helmet saved the child's life. . 

The incident occurred in Kópavogur and the dog was an Alaska Malamute, tied by a long chain in the garden of the child's neighbour. The neighbours were not at home. 

The child received serious injuries to the face and hands. The armed police were called out when the incident occurred but left when the dog's owners returned. 

The child will be undergoing further plastic surgery.
