Sindri Þór Stefánsson escaped from Iceland on Wednesday morning taking a flight to Sweden.

The prisoner who escaped from the Sognið open prison was on the same flight out of Iceland as Prime Minister Katrín Jakobsdóttir. The PM was travelling to Sweden to meet with Nordic heads of state and the Indian Prime Minister Shri Narenda Modi. 

Police said to mbl.is today that they didn't know that the prisoner, Sindri Þór Stefánsson was in custody at the open prison at Sognið, a rural prison in South Iceland. 

Stefánsson was arrested in February for massive theft of computer equpment in what has become known as The Bitcoin Heist  in Iceland. Ten other people were arrested in connection with the case. 

Interpol have issued an arrest warrant for Stefánsson who has disappeared from view, and deactivated his Facebook account at noon today.
