Three men saved a tourist yesterday who had fallen off cliffs at Arnarastapi and was clutching onto rocks in the freezing cold ocean.

"When we got to him only his head was sticking out" says Jóhann S. Ólafsson, fisherman and restaurateur at Arnarstapi. A national coastguard helicopter arrived to get the man to hospital where he is recovering.

Miðgjá in Arnarstapi is a popular tourist spot where there's a hole in the rock that leads straight into the sea.

Witnesses saw the man slip from the clliffs and ran towards the restaurant for help. Ólafsson heard the commotion and got into a boat with a local farmer. It took around fifteen minutes to get to the man. "Thankfully he had managed to get hold of some rocks and I threw a life ring towards him and we managed to drag him into the boat. He had no force he was completely cold and lifeless. He was conscious but couldn't move."

He adds that he was happy to help and to see that the man survived.
