A project is taking shape at Geysir hot spring area in South Iceland, where a series of trails is being built up Laugafell hill, just above the hot spring area. The project is set to be completed this summer and will be followed by other projects in the same area.

Valdimar Kristjánsson, director of parks at the Environment Agency of Iceland, told mbl.is that the hill was showing signs of unorganized tourist traffic, so action had to be taken. “We are now in the process of building a series of trails and observation platforms, in an effort to keep the traffic limited to one trail.”

With the new trail in place, visitors are now able to ascend Laugafell hill from the camping ground. The trail that is still being worked on will provide access up the hill from Konungshver hot spring in the Geysir hot spring area.

The work on the observation decks will be bid out soon.

Valdimar believes the project will not only improve traffic management in the area, but also increase the safety of tourists.
