A hotel has been designed to rise in Grundarfjörður fjord, near the famous Kirkjufell mountain in Snæfellsnes, West Iceland, Morgunblaðið reports. Orri Árnason, an architect who works for Zeppelin Architects, describes it as “an ode to Kirkjufell.”

The landowner asked him to design a hotel for the lot, and after drawing a two-story building, which didn’t do much for the surroundings, as he describes it, something happened. “All of a sudden, the building took control and emerged from the landscape like a mountain or a cliff,” Orri relates. The hotel is designed to have 60-100 rooms and to be almost 4,000 square meters (43,000 sq ft).

Orri foresees the hotel being constructed of wooden units and other natural material. Plans for the project are being reviewed by planning authorities in Grundarfjörður fjord. The project has been presented to one hotel chain and was, reportedly, well received.
