Skólavörðustígur, one of the streets in downtown Reykjavík, has been painted in rainbow colors – for good. At the top of the street is one of Reykjavík’s best known buildings, Hallgrímskirkja church. Unlike Klapparstígur, which was temporarily painted that way recently to celebrate Reykjavík Pride, the paint on Skólavörðustígur is made to last, mbl.is reports.
The timing couldn’t be more appropriate, for tomorrow, Reykjavík Pride, which began August 8, will culminate with the Reykjavík Pride Parade downtown, starting at 2 pm. This is a family event, typically attended by tens of thousands of people.
Yesterday, the street remained closed to traffic, for the paint, applied Tuesday, needs time to dry. That didn’t prevent it from being photographed by numerous tourists, who passed by.
The stretch of the street that has been painted runs from Bergstaðastræti down to Laugavegur. This is the part that has been closed to motorized traffic in summer, but will be open to all in winter.
The decision to have a permanent rainbow painted on Skólavörðustígur was unanimously made by the Reykjavík City Council in June.
