There has been very bad weather in the West Fjords this weekend and yesterday, the West Fjords police announced the decision to close the road between Ísafjörður and Súðavík last night due to the risk of avalanches and a little later the police announced that Flateyrarvegur in Önundarfjörður was also closed at 20 pm last night for the same reason.

“Most mountain roads in the West Fjords are closed due to winds and overcast conditions. As a matter of urgency, travelers are encouraged to check for the weather and to move before traveling between the two towns.

The Coast Guard vessel Þór will be a source of support for the first responders and trust in Dýrafjörður while this is going on,” the announcement reads.

There are two possible routes by land to reach Ísafjörður or Bolungarvík. One of them is through Súðavík and it has been more common route during the winter time. Therefore, when the road is closed, the area has considerable influence, for example concerning freight and various services.
