The NATO Air Policing will begin its operations in Iceland on Monday with the arrival of the Royal Norwegian Air Force air force squadron. The operation is scheduled to be completed in mid-February.

This is the seventh time the Norwegians have participated in the Icelandic project for NATO, but the Royal Norwegian Air Force was last patrolling in Iceland in 2021.

This is reported in an announcement from the Icelandic Coast Guard.

Four F-35 fighter jets and 80 members of the Royal Norwegian Air Force arrive on Monday for this mission in Iceland.

Working with the Icelandic Coast Guard

On NATO’s website it is reported that from “20 January on, the F-35s will be on stand-by to safeguard the airspace in the High North. Controlled by NATO's Control and Reporting Centre at Keflavik and at Combined Air Operations Centre Uedem, Germany, they will work with the Icelandic Coast Guard demonstrating enduring cohesion and solidarity among Allies.

Allies have supported Iceland's peacetime preparedness needs with rotational fighter detachments since 2008 integrating NATO airspace in the High North with Alliance-wide Air Policing standards.

The squadron will be based in the Keflavík International Airport security zone, where NATO member states’ air patrols are also staying for submarine patrol.
