The road to Bolafjall mountain in Bolungarvík, where thousands of tourists have taken to the summer, needs to be improved to safety. A year ago, a platform with unique views was installed on the cliffs with an outstanding view. To get to the top of the mountain to the platform is a very steep road in the hillside, nearly 640 m high. Therefore, paving, putting up safety rails on the slopes and other things related to the access to the mountain are up for discussion.

Another plan is to create a hiking trail on the mountain and a parking lot. It would charge user fees that would cover the ISK 200 million operation in fixing the access,” says Jón Páll Hreinsson, mayor of Bolungarvík.

You might even see Greenland

On Bolafjall mountain is a radar station managed by the Coast Guard, but originally put up by the US Army.

This summer around 20-30 thousand visitors came to Bolafjall mountain, but the view from this vantage point is unlike anything else, and locals claim that nowhere is the sunset more beautiful in late summer than on the mountain.  You can see all over Ísafjörður and the fjords and on very clear days, if you see a think white line, you are looking at Greenland!
