The Icelandic Met Office received reports from Borgarfjörður to Selfoss about the big earthquake that hit Þorbjörn last night. The people in Grindvík  also found it acutely, but it measured 4.2 in size and its source was just west of the Blue Lagoon.

Over 700 earthquakes have been recorded since midnight on the Reykjanes Peninsula, but the activity was at its greatest between three and five in the morning.

No calm on the seismometers

Bjarki Kaldalóns Friis, a natural hazard expert at the Icelandic Met Office, says that the seismic swarm is still ongoing, but that it has only slightly reduced its effectiveness. However, it is far from calm on the Icelandic Met Office’s seismometers this morning.

Seven earthquakes have been recorded above three in magnitude since midnight. At 4.25 a magnitude 4.1 earthquake was measured, six minutes later a magnitude 3.5 quake hit, and eight minutes later another one of the same magnitude struck.
