Warn people to go walking to the eruption

The police in Suðurnes are asking people not to go on foot to the volcanic eruption at the Sundhnúkagígar crater row. This is stated in the police’s Facebook post last night.

This warning follows news of increasing magma accumulation at Svartsengi. As stated on Icelandic Monitor yesterday, the Met Office says that if magma accumulation continues at a similar rate, it is more likely that the volcanic force of the eruption will increase substantially. This could include new eruption fissures between Stóra-Skógfell and Hagafell and/or the current eruption opening expanding due to a sudden increase in lava flow.

The police say that the notice could be short. “We would therefore like to appeal to people not to go on foot to the eruption,” the announcement states.
