Tourist arrivals set to reach record this summer

According to Isavia’s forecast, 8.5 million passengers will travel through Keflavík Airport this summer.

It is expected that around 2.4 million foreign tourists will visit Iceland. If the forecast materializes, this year will be the third-largest year in Keflavik’s history and the largest year in terms of foreign tourist arrivals.

28 airlines will fly to Iceland via Keflavík Airport this summer, with an average of 178 daily flights departing from Keflavík over the summer.

82 destinations available from Keflavík

Isavia announced that it will be possible to fly to 82 destinations and 28 airlines will fly directly from Keflavík. Of these, 25 airlines are scheduled to fly and three have a limited number of trips.

According to Isavia, the number of airlines was highest in 2018 when it was 29.

Airlines will also add destinations by the summer and travelers will be able to fly directly to various destinations around the world.

“We look forward to receiving even more visitors this summer. The passenger forecast assumes that over the summer months, April to October, the number of passengers will increase by 391 thousand, which is an increase of 7.2% year-on-year,” commented Grétar Már Garðarsson, director of airlines and route development at Isavia in the announcement.

Icelandair with over half of the air travel

The number of arrivals and departures at Keflavik Airport this summer will total over 37 thousand, up 5% from last year and 36% from summer 2019.

Icelandair has 58% of the air traffic at the airport, Play has 18.8%, and other airlines have 23.3%.

The total seating capacity is 6.7 million seats, a 4% increase from last year and a 26% increase from 2019.

Icelandic airlines increase number of flights

The announcement states that Icelandair will break all records for air travel since the beginning of the company. According to the passenger forecast, Icelandair’s air travel will increase by 8% from the summer of 2023 and 20% from 2019.

Play will also offer the most tours and seating capacity ever, with a 5% increase from last summer.
