The Environment Agency of Iceland ruled on Sunday that United Silicon cannot be permitted to recommence production until they comply to making all necessary improvements to their equipment stipulated by Norwegian consultants Multiconsult who investgated their premises.

United Silicon's permission for suspension of payment is no longer valid and the company handed in an application for bankruptcy proceedings yesterday.

According to the Norwegian consultants it would cost 3.1 billion Icelandic krona to make all the necessary improvements to the factory in Helguvík.

Pollution from the factory has left the local community in Reykjanes on the South West peninsula outraged.
