Sigríður Á. Andersen has stepped aside from her duties as Minister of Justice following the ruling by the European  court of human rights that she  broke article 6 of the European Convention on Human Rights on the individual's right to a fair court trial.

Andersen announced her decision at a press meeting late yesterday afternoon.  She will still hold her position as MP at parliament and has not resigned as such. She stated that her person might interfere with decisions made within the ministry.

Speaking to mbl.is she said, "This is the reality of politics. I am too fond of the courts to let it happen that people get stuck on the fact that I will have an influence on decisions made there."

The leader of the Independence Party, Bjarni Benediktsson in conjunction with members of the party will make a decision soon on who will be replacing Andersen as Minister for the time being.
