Samfélagsmiðlarnir loga vegna fregna af drápi ljónsins Cecil. Stjörnur á borð við Cöru Delevingne, Ricky Gervais og Juliette Lewis hafa tjáð sig um málið á Twitter-síðum sínum. Bandaríski tannlæknirinn Walter Palmer er sagður hafa greitt um sjö milljónir íslenskra króna fyrir að fá að drepa dýrið.

„Ég hafði ekki hug­mynd um að ljónið sem ég drap væri þekkt, í upp­á­haldi á svæðinu, væri með hálskraga og viðfangs­efni rann­sókn­ar fyrr en þegar veiðunum var að ljúka,“ seg­ir tann­lækn­ir­inn Walter Pal­mer í yf­ir­lýs­ingu til Guar­di­an, en Pal­mer á yfir höfði sér ákæru í Zimba­bwe fyr­ir að hafa drepið ljónið Cecil.

Cecil var eitt ást­sæl­asta ljón Afr­íku og þekkt­ur fyr­ir þykk­an dökk­an makka. Hann var 13 ára gamall þegar hann var lokkaður út úr þjóðgarði með beitu og skot­inn með boga og ör. Talið er að það hafi tekið Cecil um 40 klukku­stund­ir að deyja.
