Ástralski skemmtikrafturinn Barry Humphries, sem þekktastur var fyrir leik sinn í gervi karaktersins Dame Edna Everage, er látinn 89 ára að aldri.
Humphries lést á sjúkrahúsi í Sydney en þar lá hann inni vegna fylgikvilla í kjölfar aðgerðar á mjöðm í mars.
Dame Edna sló í gegn í Bretlandi á áttunda áratugnum og sá Humphries um spjallþátt í sjónvarpi í gervi hennar seint á níunda áratugnum.
Fjölmargir hafa minnst Humphries á samfélagsmiðlum, eins og sjá má hér að neðan. Áður en hann lést hafði batakveðjum sömuleiðis rignt á alnetið.
Sending my best wishes to Barry Humphries. Barry's timing has always been astonishing. Here's Dame Edna Everage effortlessly turning Martin Sheen into a giggling mess.

RIP Barry Humphries. This is probably my all-time favourite clip of his. Class, and so dead pan as well … pic.twitter.com/DUEnTktQ6w

Dame Edna infiltrates the Royal Box, so to speak. This is fabulous!

Barry Humphries was the funniest man alive, in my book. & thoughtful & kind as well as subversively hilarious. I’m writing a small tribute for Monday’s @Telegraph but it’s not easy to encapsulate his genius & huge charm. So much gratitude for so many years of outrageous laughter https://t.co/zCQVo8PzzG

The Australian comedian spoke to Jon Snow in 2021 about his beloved character, Dame Edna Everage, and her "psychic" abilities to predict the future. pic.twitter.com/GgSp65DOak
So sad to learn Barry Humphries has passed away. When I visited him in his Sydney Hospital two weeks ago he was ailing from several health problems. But his spirits and wit were as acute as ever. We laughed away as the stories poured out. Funny, hugely literate, fiercely smart.
